2008-08: Manga Top 100 Volumes and Top 25 Series for August 2008

So just what is the Manga Top 100?

It's a chart of comparative manga rankings based on aggregate online sales listings. Yes, I know that's a bit of a mouthful and it might not make sense at first glance; the explanation for just what it means and why this isn't really a bestseller list (in the traditional sense) follows after the jump.

I'm going to lead with this, though:

The full chart, the actual "Manga 100" posted at the end of this column, is based on data pulled from online retailers that sell manga.

The methodology used differs quite a bit from other posted bestseller lists with which you might be familiar, such as the USA Today weekly book charts or ICv2's monthly posts of graphic novel sales. There are two reasons for that: first, this chart is designed to track online sales, as opposed to sales in either the direct market or in bookstores. The online market is different from retail; while some of the same titles that sell in stores are also popular online, the customer base, demand, and overall availability of titles are all different. A title isn't limited because of stocking decisions made by corporate buyers and indivdual retailers -- for the most part if it's in print and out there, then online a site is also selling it to somebody, somewhere.

Second, I track online sales because I can't get the proprietary data to which USA Today and ICv2 have access: actual unit sales in bookstores, or through comic shops and the direct market.

In place of unit or dollar sales numbers, the Manga 100 uses scores assigned to tiles based on how they rank in sites' posted "bestseller" lists, or in how highly the volumes place when a site's manga category is sorted by sales or popularity. The higher the placement, the higher the score, obviously. Our crack staff checks 10 online sales sites multiple times a week, assigning scores to the individual manga volumes based on how they rank and compiling all those points in a spreadsheet to produce the following charts.

It'd be nice to just get a batch of Neilsen Bookscan numbers, do a little fact-checking and after one or two spot fixes, to then hit the 'sort' button and get a list in under 2 seconds. It takes me about 16 hours a week to make up for the lack of that data. One shouldn't assume, though, that the lack of actual, 'real' sales data is a fatal handicap; these "aggregate comparitive online sales rankings" may not constitute a bestseller list in the traditional sense, but they are very effective at taking the pulse of online demand and reporting on it quickly. (That is to say: fan boys, otaku, yaoistas, & fujoshi -- along with their cohorts and compatriots of varying degrees of fannish dedication -- can move a title up or down the Amazon Hourly Bestseller List a heck of a lot faster than Neilsen Bookscan can track.)

The strength of an online-based method derives from the breadth of sources used, the frequency at which sources can be checked, the focus one can bring to even the smallest market segments (manga makes up less than 1% of all book sales), and the immediacy and responsiveness of online sales to consumer demand. The only trick left is developing the method.

Nuts and Bolts:

The August Rankings presented below represent 5 weeks of data (Mon 28 Jul through Fri 29 Aug) and 94 individual site checks. The sites:

Online Bookstores: Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Borders, Chapters of Canada, and Amazon's Manga Category Listing
Other Sales Charts: Amazon's Hourly Bestsellers, Buy.com, Deepdiscount.com, Powell's, Tower, and Virgin

All sites are loaded up at least once a week. The core sites (Amazon, B&N, Borders) are each checked three times a week, with the top 300 titles scored: #1=300 points, then proceeding down until finally a single point is assigned to last place. If you add in the Amazon Hourly Bestsellers for manga -- which differ from the Amazon Manga Category listings -- then these three sites account for about 3/4 of the total data set. The other sales sites also matter, just not as much.

For my weekly charts, which in their current form have been continuously posted for the last six months, I also track movement from week to week (or include a short note of when a title was last ranked) but since this is the first presentation of a monthly manga chart, that comparative and historical data just isn't in place yet. To partially cover the gap I've imported the volume and series rankings from the weekly chart dated 3 August. Obviously this is not a one-for-one comparison, but as a bandage it does fill in a gap -- and is better by far than a leaving a blank in the listings.

To make it more meaningful, I've developed a hybrid chart showing not only the series with its rank and composite score, but also a few of the volumes (with their ranks & points) that contribute to that score. Yes, I think we all know that folks like Naruto. Past the two top 10s the charts get a little more interesting.

There are some shorter series (4 to 6 volumes currently available) that are also performing quite well; the ones to watch are Vampire Knight, Rosario+Vampire, and High School Debut.

Vampire Knight will likely overtake Fruits Basket in April when the 6th volume is finally available -- each volume is ranking quite well (consistantly within the top 50, often better) so even with a volume count that's only one third of Fruits Basket's, I predict it will move from a top 5 title to a top 3 title in the spring.

Rosario+Vampire is trending in the same direction, but hasn't been quite as popular. There is a different dynamic in place here, though:

While releases of Fruits basket have slowed to 3-a-year and Vampire Knight is stretching out to one release every six months, Shonen Jump is putting out a Rosario+Vampire book every other month. By this time next year there may be 10 volumes on the shelf, and each release only bumps up the combined series score.

High School Debut is also on a 6-a-year track, and so may be complete (at 12 volumes) by the end of '09. I don't know if we could infer a 'sales bonus' for complete series (the Death Note effect) but it's possible. Also, if my opinion counts for anything, I like it -- and I'm telling you to give it a shot.

The September Rankings presented below represent 4 weeks of data (Tues 2 Sep through Mon 29 Sep) and 79 individual site checks. (Would have been 80 but I missed the last Amazon check)

In place of unit sales ("real" data, considered proprietary and a closely held secret of all publishers and retailers) these manga rankings use scores assigned to tiles based on how highly the volumes place on online sales sites' posted "bestseller" lists, or a search of their manga offerings sorted by popularity. The higher the placement, the higher the score, obviously.

* Longer lists are better, I think we can all agree on that: I've upgraded to a Top 100 Series and Top 250 Volumes. * The weighted scores for each series have been scaled back; in place of point totals in the thousands and thousands, I've set up a formula that pegs #1 (Naruto) at 100 points, with everyone else scoring some fraction of that. (it's a straight scalar so all scores are still proportional)

So here's the hard bit: what can I say to add to the actual numbers (the bit based on hard evidence, and presumably the only chunk you and other readers are interested in) that will add value? The most I can do is attempt to highlight current trends, or perhaps make an attempt at interpretation for you, based on my own experience -- though either practice could be discounted as merely me presenting my opinion, and in any event any additional gloss on my part is suspect as I'm the guy who is running the numbers to begin with.

To the limits of my method, though, interesting things can be revealed. Let's take a look at Fruits Basket -- Tokyopop has not only been releasing so-called-Ultimate editions the equivalent of two paperbacks in a single hardcover volume) but also a raft of assorted other Furuba-bits: a sticker book, a fan book, a planner. Of all of this, what ranks highest online?

You'll note that the one thing the customers want is the actual manga. The most recent volumes rank highest, followed by online orders for the midlist: vols. 8 & 9, 5 & 6; they're onboard with the series, they're both fans and regular readers at this point, they just can't always find the books-in-between at their local.

The Ultimate Editions are selling, but even lowly volume one ($10, four and a half years old) outsells every one of the recent compilation editions.

What can we assume from this? Nothing, really, but if I were a manga publisher I might worry less about repackaging new editions of old manga and concentrate on making sure the backlist is still in print, in stock, and out on shelves. Maybe take those stickers and put them in a re-packaged, shrink-wrapped edition of (what is basically just
the same) volume one. You have brand recognition, and a title people want, and a format ($10 200-page paperbacks) that you've spent the last 6 years building up -- this isn't the time to change the ground rules. Build on strengths. If you want to offer big chunks, then bundle multiple volumes for online sale; you don't even have to waste
cardboard on a special Box Set, just assign a new ISBN to vols. 1-4, 5-8, etc. and ship them out shrink-wrapped together.

Speaking for consumers everywhere, I would like to assert: We want translated manga-- the actual drawings in your books. Everything else that just gets in the way just gets in the way.

That said... well... OK, so the new VizBig editions actually are offering some value-added content, most notably the color pages previous presented as such in Japanese anthology magazines: If there is a color original and you can offer that in a reprint, then maybe you do have an excuse to republish old manga in
collected editions (you might even get away with a mark-up). That, and shorter, self-contained (& older) series [_Azumanga Daioh_, _Demon Ororon_ et al.] are certainly welcome in all-in-one omnibus editions. _Battle Royale_ reprints also make sense as the original volumes are no longer available in stores -- but Fruits Basket? Most B&N and
Borders locations are stocking close-to-complete-runs because new books are still coming out and the original editions continue to sell quite well -- as noted in the extracted chart above. Tokyopop was perhaps 2-3 years too early with any sort of Ultimate Edition of Fruits Basket.

The October Rankings presented below represent 4 weeks of data (Mon 6 Oct through Sun 2 Nov, omitting data from the week ending 19 October for the sole reason that I wasn't able to enter data that week) and 80 individual site checks.

In place of unit sales ("real" data, considered proprietary and a closely held secret of all publishers and retailers) these manga rankings use scores assigned to tiles based on how highly the volumes place on online sales sites' posted "bestseller" lists, or a search of their manga offerings sorted by popularity. The higher the placement, the higher the score, obviously.

Some new releases (Oct./Nov. titles) are making big gains now that they are finally available to ship, but even though gains of a thousand ranks (or more) seems impressive, this is in fact just the usual bump a title gets as soon as it is physically available. There is a psychological curb that divides available for pre-order from ships in 24 hrs. -- even online shoppers respond to the illusion of instant gratification.

Nuts and Bolts:

The November Rankings presented below represent 3 weeks of data (Sun 2 Nov through Sun 16 Nov, omitting data from the last two weeks because I wasn't available to enter data -- yes, I stil do all of my own data entry, more than 5500 lisings a week; even minor obstacles are enough to throw me off my game and foul the data collection process) and 60 individual site checks.

In place of unit sales ("real" data, considered proprietary and a closely held secret of all publishers and retailers) these manga rankings use scores assigned to tiles based on how highly the volumes place on online sales sites' posted "bestseller" lists, or a search of their manga offerings sorted by popularity. The higher the placement, the higher the score, obviously.
