Instead of a label, I'm going to give a book series I've found in my local library that I found rather interesting, though I haven't read enough to give more than a decent summary.
There's a series of Children's Books entitled:
ブンダバー (With an English Transcription on the book of "Wunderbar" (literal translation makes it sound like "Bundabar."))
Anyway, Wunderbar starts off telling the story of an Old Man and his Wife, who own an antique shop together. The Old Woman has always wanted a chest to keep her clothes in, as she has alot, but every birthday the Old Man gives her something else. Finally one year, the Old Man goes out to a junk yard and while looking for something to fix up and give her, he finds a chest! He loads it onto his old truck and takes it home, puts it in the workshop to clean up, and goes to work. He cleans it, paints it, and realizes there is this weird design on it that looks like a child scribbled a cat-like face. Around this time his wife comes to see what he's up to, as he's been in the workshop too long. She gets happy to realize she'll be getting a chest for her birthday, but then there is a funny sound. Eventually, out from within the chest, comes a cat. But not an ordinary cat, no...this one talks. After the two faint from shock, they awake in their beds, with the cat introducing itself. When they wonder how they were carried to their bed, the cat brings them down to the chest, which he says is really strong and carried them all the way. Thus begins the life of the Old Couple and their antique shop, the mysterious cat, and his friend the chest.
Apparently it's a really popular series among the younger audience at the moment. There are currently, if memory serves for what I saw in the library, around 9 volumes of the series. There are images on practically all pages, and it's written in elementary school level kanji, (i haven't had a problem yet, and there are furigana on the ones that I would have), and alot of it is written in hiragana/katakana.
All in all, I'd say that if you were starting Japanese, and been into it for a little while but have yet to pick up any books, give it a shot, it might surprise you.
