Shogakukan to Release "Encyclopedia of Contemporary Manga"Shogakukan is set to release a retrospective of classic manga titles from 1945 to 2005, on October 30th. Titled The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Manga (English title: literal Japanese title is Modern Manga Museum), it introduces roughly 700 titles from 4 eras (1945-58, 59-69, 70-80, 81-2000 and 2001-2005) along with brief excerpts from the manga and publication data. It also includes a mangaka index, manga chronology and complete list of publishers' award winners. ![]() The book will be split up as follows: Main Section: 68 pages of 4-color frontispieces and 360 monochrome pages Chapter 1 (1945~1958) The Start of Post-War Manga - The Era of Akahon (Red Book) Manga and Monthly Magazines Chapter 2 (1959~1969) The Birth of Shonen/Shoujo Weeklies and Seinen Magazines - Manga's Rapid Development Chapter 3 (1970~1980) The Evolution and Diversification of Expression - The Reform and Revolution of Manga Chapter 4 (1981~2000) The Growth and Maturation of the Comic Market - The Era of Expansion and Globalisation Chapter 5 (2000~2005) Towards a New Era Supplementary Information: 104 pages monochrome |
