Wikipedia excerpt on Hana Yori Dango:
As of September 2005, Hana Yori Dango boasted 48 million volumes published, good for second place all-time, but following the smash-hit TV dramatization, expanded its publication to 54 million total volumes, becoming the best-selling shoujo manga in Japanese history. Also, in the issue of "Margaret" magazine that went on sale on December 9th 2005, the author announced the start of a sequel some time in 2006.

Yes, we all know that the North American manga fan is the ultimate bastion of good taste.
Darn. I consider myself
Darn. I consider myself somewhat of a shoujo fan, but only two of my interests are on the entire list. And one of them I haven't even seen yet. Though I do tend to like older and more mature stuff. Most Western grownups don't read comic books.
Hmmm..I found manga I like
Hmmm..I found manga I like on both list but more of them were on the "below 10,000,000" list ^-^;;

Actually, they're worse. V

Actually me too. While there are series on the above 10mil that are my favorite like HyD (at least at one point over the 10 years I was following it), Nana, and Basara, most of the ones I like are below 10mil like tsumi ni nureta futari, parakiss, ouran host club, haou airen, sensual phase, nodame cantabile, kodocha, ayu monogatari...etc.
...I'm ashamed to say I've
...I'm ashamed to say I've only read 7 of the ones above 10.000.000...
I never could understand what's so great about Nana, though. And I've read 12-13 vols, so yeah, I know what I'm talking about. It simply... pisses me off.
Skip Beat isn't on the list.. ;__; and that's probably one of the best mangas I've ever read, together with YamaNade, which is firmly in place on 5.000.000 sold copies... ^__^ Even that guy from SADS (forgot his name) reads YamaNade.
PSME at 15.6mil. -why no tv
PSME at 15.6mil. -why no tv series? The ova glossed over to much story.
you have to remember that
you have to remember that they add up the total in the entire series, so IMO the more accurate number should be the number of sells/volume... which the below 10 mil doesn't list, but some of them are really short...
I've read like 14-15 in the
I've read like 14-15 in the over 10,000,000 and I gotta agree that some were up there only because they're so long in volumes (ouke no monshou - it dragged on so long I stopped in the middle) so you can argue that some better stuff are below.
>>Skip Beat isn??????t on the list.. ;__; and that??????s probably one of the best mangas I??????ve ever read.
Nana's not too bad, only that you've gotta like the modern girl type story and not mind the carelessness of the characters...
don't understand why HYD got
don't understand why HYD got so popular.
I got bored reading it .....alright I did enjoy som parts but not enough to make me buy it.
Cool, I have read most of
Cool, I have read most of the series on the list - gotta agree with the others on #/volume being more accurate.
Let's see, that would change things to:
1. Nana - I've read a couple but I can't get into it...
2. Chibi Maruko-chan - haven't read any
3. Doubutsu no O-isha-san
4. Hot Road - I should really read this
5. Rose of Versailles
5. Hana Yori Dango
7. Candy Candy
8. Yuukan Club
9. Glass no Kamen - another run-on series...
10. Tenshi Nanka ja Nai - everyone should read this one, I think it's her best
11. Genji Monogatari
12. Marmalade Boy
13. Card Captor Sakura
14. Paradise Kiss
15. Aka-chan to Boku
16. Tokimeki Tonight
17. Kodomo no Omocha
18. Ace o Nerae!
19. Fruits Basket
20. Fushigi Yuugi
But what was Hana Yori Dango
But what was Hana Yori Dango (or one of those other series)'s sales per vol when they were only 15 volumes long? Or would Nana still have its impressive numbers if it goes over 40 vols, what if sales drop?
Right! My all time fava is
Right!
My all time fava is not on the list (Rayearth) and my second fava has got second place (Glass Mask). To be totally redone, this list-.-
This is gay....
Wow goes to show that japanese girls have no taste in manga, pft Ouran was sooo kickass and the anime was even more kickass and fruits basket was pretty good too, and they have all the gay mangas on top, wow just wow :(
I was surprised that Magic
I was surprised that Magic Knight Rayearth wasn't on the list....I am almost certain it was a big selling manga in Japan....but I don't know.....
I sure wish I could get Rose of Versailles....I heard it's a wonderful manga (only about 4 of the 15 volumes were ever published in English, and that was nearly 25 years ago, and I don't believe they were ever reprinted here in the US after that). There is a live action movie of RoV, but I can't find that either....
The list seems ok. My
The list seems ok. My favorite series are on the top of the list (Hana Yori Dango, Nana, Basara, Glass Mask, Red River, Please Save My Earth, etc.). And, there are many series on that list, I haven't read, but I doubt, many will surpass the ones above, in terms of quality.
Also, I don't know they are counted, but I would have liked to see Goong and Princess, there. If I can trust my favorites, they should have good selling numbers, too.
Thanks, for the list.
Two faves
I love NANA it's shame the next chapter is coming in December since Yazawa-san is ill :( love Kaikan Phrase haven't finishd it yet
Yay!
I've read a lot of these shoujos~
Hana Yori Dango [gave up after a bit cause of art... yuck], Glass Mask, Nana, Aka-chan to Boku [Baby & Me], PSME, Basara, Red River, Furuba, Fuushigi Yuugi, Kare Kano, CCS, and let's not forget... Hana-Kimi! ^__^ Best series EVER. *rapes Sano*
OMGGGGGGG
I've read a crapload of the "under 10 million". I especially like Ai Yazawa's works [ParaKiss, Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai, etc etc] and Shinjo Mayu's works [Kaikan Phrase & Haou Airen - though I HATE Haou Airen].
Deep Love is on there. ^_^ I'm shocked. It'a pleasant surprise. 2 volumes [the first one alone] and over 1 million sales. Damnnnnnn
Kare First Love is also great
...I LOVE A LOT OF THESE
None beat Hana Kimi though. ;D
There are some manga on
There are some manga on there that I'm surprised its on the top. Nana being one because it's a fairly new manga and glass mask on the other hand has be going on for at least two to three decades. I truley love glass mask, which makes me wish that the author would quit changing her minds all the time and start publishing her work. Two years is long enough to come up a volume.
Well, It's not like American's have good taste in Manga. Personally, I'm like everyone that loves a shoujo like furuba and Ouran. But people who never read style like glass mask or Basara should never say anything like that. It just shows that some people scope of understanding in manga is limited. There are many manga licensed that did not get the attention they deserve in the U.S. market today as they did in the Japanese market simply because their style does not fit the popular perception of shoujo manga, which is cute and bubbly.
I have read various manga in
I have read various manga in the list like Boyd Over Flowers, it's cute but it isn't that great it's a manga that one notices that most of the volumes are refill to get more money cuz it got very popular... anyway... Nana is great!!! I love it!!!! Red River is suuuper I love it, I recommend it to everyone since it has history ^.^. I'm surprised that please save my earth is at the top cuz the drawings are not that good, but the story is very good though... Sailor Moon!!! of course it's greaaat!! I love it! Hana Kimi suuper hilarious! Bride of Deimos is a little scary... I wished that some company acquired the rights to read it! and of course Fruits Basket!! very cuuuute!! Oh! and Fushigi Yugiii!! Have to reaaaaaaad iiit! I love it!!
Below the 10,000
Lovely Complex, its not that good, it's kinda stupid, if both people like each other to hell with everyone else!
Honey and Clover, hilaaaaaaaarious!! love it
Tenshi Nanka ja Nai, suuuper goood!! Read it! you're not going to regret it!
ParaKiss , veeery good! and funny too!
Nodame Cantabile!!, suuuper hilarious! love it!
Ouran High Schoo Host Club, veeery funny
Socrates in Love ;-; very heartbreaking
Deep Love, cried like a baby ;-;
Glass Mask deserves its
Glass Mask deserves its (soon to be reclaimed top) place on that list. It's one of those timeless manga like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The writing really does credit to the classic plays that are featured in it. This isn't one of countless shoujo manga where the story is merely a vehicle for the romantic relationship the author wants to push.

Where is Skip Beat!?
WHERE IS SKIP BEAT!???Seriously,an excellent manga, one of the best shoujo ever is not even in the list? And Nana,ParaKiss,Fushigi Yuugi and whole lot of others in the list=CRAPLOAD.They do NOT deserve it.*deep sigh*
Interesting way to look at
Interesting way to look at it. For the most part, I agree with you. It would be great if got more post like this. I appreciate it.
Uhh... it's not like it was a best reviewed list
It's a best-seller list. Not like popularity has always been the sign of a great series. This list includes very young shoujo to more mature, and that's a lot. I think you have to consider the period when a lot of these series came out though, a lot of these shoujo series were considered kind of groundbreaking then.
I've read 13 of the above 10,000,000 titles- maybe not finished them all but- I've read enough to know it. And I've read a lot of the below 10,000,000 titles as well. (Don't worry, I was raised reading manga so... I kind of have a head start.)
With time some of these series might sell even more copies if they bring back some kind of reincarnation. (New Glass Mask and Itazura na Kiss TV, HYD Dramas)
P.S. I don't really like Nana but I believe that it strikes a chord with young Japanese women especially. It's so freaking Tokyo that I can't even handle it. ^^;; It's like the Tokyo fantasy but with reality injected in. I just wanted to say that, like doesn't anyone else find it more depressing than say... EVANGELION?? XD
This list is really helpful too! I'll use it to determine what I'll read next... :)
Blech
I came here looking for a good shoujo manga to read, but just the artwork of the top 3 put me off. The better ones are way down on the list.
