Or it could be, he was being super-accurate from the Japanese standpoint. Anime is regularly called "manga" by anyone aged 25 and up. So if the writer had some background in Japan, I'd say that was a possibility.

But this is Variety we're talking about here...they're not exactly known for their deep understanding of Japanese manga and its culture...or perhaps the writer was just really a manga fan, who knows :P
