July, 2006(LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2006) - Seven Seas Entertainment is proud to formally announce the acquisition of 4 new Japanese licenses-manga series Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~, Kodomo no Jikan, Neconoclasm, and the novel series Shinigami no Ballad. First announced during Seven Seas' panels at Anime Expo and the San Diego Comic-Con, each of these new titles brings something unique to Seven Seas' ever-expanding line-up of manga and novels. E-book Japan will start carrying Shogakugan's long-running manga series in e-book format. The first series to be made available is "Tokyo Daigaku Monogatari," the first 10 volumes will be on sale July 28. There are also plans to finish the rest of the series (34 Volumes in total). To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its annual Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award event, and the many manga artist and judges involved, Asahi Shimbun will be hosting the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award 10th Anniversary event, "Manga Mirai Seiki " (Literally: Manga Future Century), on 9/10 at the Yurakucho Asahi Hall. Past award winners, nominees, judges, and other manga artists will take part in the event. The event has three sections, which will feature and discuss the history of the Tezuka award, the future and potential of manga, and an "art showdown" between artists. According to Yaoi Suki, Kitty Media will be releasing a few new yaoi titles, including Can't Stop Loving You by Takakura Row. According to Del Rey's July newsletter, Ali Kokmen, CPM's former Director of Book Sales, is now Del Rey's new Manga Marketing Manager. Yuki Urushibara's popular comic "Mushishi" (serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon Magazine, recently licensed in North American by Del Rey) will be adapted into a live-action film starring Jo Odagiri. The director will be Katsuhiro Otomo of AKIRA fame.
AnimeAnime recently started a series called "100 Questions About Anime & Manga Overseas", where Japanese fans send in their questions about the foreign Anime and Manga scene. One of the questions asked was "How is the Quality of a Fansub's Translation, and the Translator's Skill?". AnimeAnime has posted a special 2-part follow-up to that article, titled "Fansubs and the Gloom of the Anime Industry." In Part 1, Romi (the writer) talks about the history of fansubs, and how the growth of internet affected the fandom in general. In Part 2, Romi talks about how some fansubbers defend their actions.
